The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program, also known as Section 8, is the federal government's program for assisting low-income families, the disabled, and the elderly afford housing.

New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) will begin accepting new Section 8 applications for its HCV waitlist on June 3, 2024. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM only.

There is no impact to households currently on NYCHA’s Section 8 waitlist. NYCHA will continue to assign vouchers (when they become available) using the existing waitlist and will add 200,000 randomly selected applications to the waitlist.

All members of the public, including current NYCHA residents and applicants, are eligible to apply for the waitlist.

The HVC Program does not have a residency requirement.

The waitlist is expected to be established by August 1, 2024.

Section 8 is intended for low-income families that fit the following criteria:

  • Head of household is 18 years of age or older (or declared an "emancipated minor");
  • At least one member of the family is a U.S. citizen or non-citizen with eligible immigration status; and
  • The household's gross income is 50 percent or below the area median income (AMI) [see the income limit chart below].

You may be eligible if your family's annual gross income does not exceed the following income limits:

Waitlist Priorities

Applicants will be ranked based on preference categories.

Preferences, in order of priority, are:

  1. Mobility impaired and residing in inaccessible housing
  2. Elderly persons (62 years of age and older) and persons with disabilities
  3. All other applicants

The fastest and most efficient way to apply for the HCV Program is online.

The application will be available online from Monday, June 3, 2024, at 12 AM, through Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM.

Paper Application

Paper applications will only be made available as a reasonable accommodation.

You can request a reasonable accommodation from Monday, June 3, 2024, through Friday, June 7, 2024 (8 AM to 5 PM) by:

  • Calling to have an application mailed to you or
  • Visiting one of the locations below to get an application in person:
