  • Understand how the City assesses and values property and determines property taxes
  • Speak one-on-one with DOF staff to resolve issues

At NOPV events, you can:

  • Speak one-on-one with someone from the Department of Finance and the NYC Tax Commission
  • Ask questions about your property’s market value and assessed value
  • Learn how to dispute your property’s assessed value
  • Learn how to get your property description changed
  • Learn about exemptions and how to apply for them

You can apply for or renew a property tax exemption at a public outreach event.

Department of Finance (DOF) staff will work with you one-on-one to help you complete an application.

To apply for or renew a property tax exemption, all owners must be present to sign the application.

Please bring:

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • 2017 or 2018 income documents for all owners. For example:
    • Tax returns
    • SSA
    • SSDI
    • Pension
    • Annuity
  • DD214 or honorable discharge papers (for veterans)
  • Trust or life estate documents (if applicable)
  • Death certificate for any deceased owners (if applicable)
  • Pre-filled application you received in the mail, (if applicable)
  • Any related letters or notices you received from DOF

If you are applying for or renewing a SCHE or DHE exemption, you can also get one-on-one assistance at a SCHE and DHE Assistance Center. For locations, go to the Property Tax Exemption Assistance page.

You can apply for or renew the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) or Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE) at a public outreach event.

Department of Finance (DOF) staff will work with you one-on-one to help you complete an initial or renewal application. No appointment is necessary.

Please bring:

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • 2018 income documents for all household members. If documents for 2018 are not available, you may use 2017 documents. Examples of income documents include:
    • Tax returns
    • SSA
    • SSDI
    • Pension
    • Annuity
  • Proof of rent for your apartment type (for example, rent stabilized, rent controlled, and Mitchell Lama)
  • Copies of your two most recent leases
  • A Social Security disability award letter or VA disability or compensation notice of award letter (if applicable)
  • Pre-filled application you received in the mail (if applicable)
  • Any related letters or notices you received from DOF
