You can update your business information online or download a form to fill out and mail to the Department of Finance from their website.

New York State registration requirements include:

  • Partnerships must register with the County Clerk's Office where the business is located.
  • A sole proprietorship (under a name other than your own, such as a trade name or an assumed name or "doing business as") must register with the County Clerk's Office where the business is located.
  • Corporations must register with the Secretary of State, Department of State, in Albany.

Federal Employer ID Number (EIN)  

By federal law, corporations, partnerships, and certain sole proprietorships must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to use as a taxpayer identification number. No additional identifying number is required to do business in New York City; the EIN assigned by the IRS is accepted.

To apply for an EIN, use Federal Form SS-4, which is available online.

Businesses licensed by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) must get approval from DCA when relocating. If you do not report the change of address, you are breaking the law and may get fined for every day you fail to make the update. 

Some types of businesses must submit additional documentation, and some must submit a new application when they relocate.

You can submit a Change of Address request in person at the DCA Licensing Center. You may also be able to submit your request online using the DCA Business Toolbox.

If your Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA)-licensed business changed its business or trade ("doing business as") name, you must report the change to the DCA. You may get fined for every day that you do not make the update. 

You can submit a Change of Name request in person at the DCA Licensing Center. You can also submit your request online

You can submit a business name change request to the DCA only after you have:

  • Filed a Certificate of Amendment with the New York State Department of State and received approval. 
  • Obtained an updated business certificate based on your business's legal structure.
