You can report unsanitary conditions, improper maintenance, or missing or broken safety equipment at a commercial pool or sauna and residential pools.

You can make a complaint about unmaintained or unsanitary pools in the backyards of private homes during mosquito season if these pools are attracting mosquitoes. Mosquito season is April 1 to October 31.

The pool owners first and last name along with the owner’s phone number are required to file this complaint.

You can make a complaint about the maintenance or cleanliness of public pools or their facilities.

You can report swimming-related illnesses and unsanitary pool or spa pool water to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Unsanitary water conditions may include contamination, sewage, or oil spills.

You can make a complaint about unsanitary conditions or maintenance issues in a pool, whirlpool, or sauna located in a health club, hotel, multiple dwelling, or private condominium.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene usually does not accept complaints about these issues for pools at single-family homes.

During mosquito season, you can make a standing water complaint if the pool may be attracting mosquitoes. Mosquito season is April 1 to October 31.

You can report a pool with a missing or inadequate fence on commercial or residential property.

You can report missing or broken safety equipment or signs at public and private pools, saunas, steam rooms, and spas to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Reports accepted include:

  • Missing or broken lifesaving equipment such as a rescue tubes, backboards, or first aid kits
  • Missing signs about occupancy limits and when swimming is allowed
