Anyone can experience abuse regardless of:

  • Age
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender identity
  • Ethnicity
  • Social group

Most forms of gender-based violence involve one person having power and control over another. This often looks like someone crossing your physical, emotional, sexual, or financial boundaries in a specific situation, or on an ongoing basis. It may not always be clear when a situation crosses from healthy to unhealthy, or from unhealthy to something that may be considered gender-based violence.

Common types of gender-based violence include:

  • Intimate partner violence
  • Family violence
  • Sexual violence
  • Stalking
  • Human trafficking
